S5W-10813: Alison Johnstone (Lothian)

Scottish Green Party

Date lodged: 17 August 2017

To ask the Scottish Government whether it has examined the incidence of so-called holiday hunger among school children and their families over school holiday periods.

Answered by: John Swinney 5 September 2017

Local authorities have the statutory powers to provide meals to children outwith term time and some choose to use these powers to provide lunch/activity clubs. Local authorities are best placed to examine what holiday provision may be required in their local communities to meet local need. The Scottish Government encourages local authorities to allocate their total financial resources on this basis.

We are aware that several local authorities in Scotland offer holiday lunch club provision and we continue to welcome any activity that may contribute to supporting the most vulnerable in our society.
