S5W-12878: Maurice Corry (West Scotland)

Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party

Date lodged: 21 November 2017

To ask the Scottish Government what support it gives to Scottish Mountain Rescue.

Answered by: Annabelle Ewing 30 November 2017

The Scottish Government (SG) provides annual grant funding to Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) of £312,000 and is the only Government in the UK to fund mountain rescue in this way. The funding is distributed by SMR to the 27 voluntary (civilian) teams across Scotland according to an established funding formula. SG is also providing £100,000 over three years, from 2016-17 – 2018-19, to assist with replacing SMR's ageing VHF radio equipment. Smaller amounts of funding, have also been provided in previous years, following consideration of individual requests. SG has further supported SMR, recently, by offering access to SG knowledge and expertise in specialist areas, such as ‘public communications’ and ‘procurement advice’, to help the organisation and it's civilian volunteer teams to continue to carry out their vital work, effectively.
