S5W-14512: Maurice Corry (West Scotland)

Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party

Date lodged: 8 February 2018

To ask the Scottish Government whether the steering group for its Marine Litter Strategy has discussed the issue of nurdles, and what action it recommends is taken on this issue.

Answered by: Roseanna Cunningham 1 March 2018

The Marine Litter Strategy Steering Group has discussed nurdles. Membership includes the charity Fidra which aims to reduce plastic pollution in our seas. They promote Operation Clean Sweep which encourages best practice handling methods in the plastics industry when working with nurdles to minimise spills and ensure clean-ups are managed responsibly. The Steering Group supports the Scottish Government working with Fidra to consider how to extend Operation Clean Sweep to involve the whole of the supply chain of plastic products.
