S5W-16271: Maurice Corry (West Scotland)

Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party

Date lodged: 30 April 2018

To ask the Scottish Government what analysis it has carried out of the scale and nature of the misuse of (a) (i) prescription and (ii) non-prescription painkillers and (b) other drugs among veterans, and what action it is taking to reduce levels.

Answered by: Shona Robison 9 May 2018

We welcome the work carried out by the Scottish Veterans Commissioner and the publication of his report Veterans Health and Wellbeing: A Distinctive Scottish Approach. We will consider the findings and recommendations carefully, including how we respond to the challenges raised.

The Scottish Government is refreshing our drug strategy - Road to Recovery – which will be published in summer 2018. The new strategy recognises that there needs to be a range of services supporting different people with different needs. We are currently working with Public Health England on an evidence review they are carrying out for prescribed medicines that may cause dependence or withdrawal. This review is expected to provide a number of recommendations which it may be appropriate for us to adopt.
