S5W-17488: David Stewart (Highlands and Islands)

Scottish Labour

Date lodged: 25 June 2018

To ask the Scottish Government what steps it is taking to increase awareness of (a) people living with diabetes and (b) healthcare professionals regarding the benefits of real-time continuous glucose monitoring systems and insulin pumps.

Answered by: Joe FitzPatrick 13 July 2018

The benefits of insulin pump therapy and Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) is well evidenced and established.

We are currently funding a part-time diabetes specialist nurse to help promote the adoption of CGM technology. This specialist support is helping ensure that clinical teams have the appropriate infrastructure, skills and training in place to safely and effectively deliver this important technology, including sharing good practice and information events.

We encourage all Boards to make full and best use of this national resource.

It is for clinicians in consultation with patients to determine which treatment is appropriate based on clinical guidance and individual circumstances, and to raise awareness and provide information.

Appropriate education is delivered prior to initiation of insulin pump therapy and CGMs.
